A 57-year-old hiker was mauled to death by a grizzly bear Wednesday while hiking with his wife in Yellowstone National Park. The couple, whose names and hometown have not yet been released, were hiking on the Wapiti Lake Trail, roughly a mile and a half from the trail head, when the man encountered a grizzly sow and her cubs. As the bear attacked the man, his wife began screaming for help. Another group of hikers heard the cries and dialed 911, but by the time park rangers arrived the man had died. His wife suffered only bumps and bruises. “The initial indication is the sow grizzly was protecting her cubs,” Yellowstone Spokesman Al Nash . The incident is the first bear-caused human death in the park in 25 years. “It is extremely unfortunate that this couple’s trip into the Yellowstone backcountry has ended in tragedy,” Park Superintendent Dan Wenk . “Our heart goes out to the family and friends of the victim as they work to cope with their loss.”
