Australia’s Craig Alexander established a new course record and took his third career victory at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships, . Alexander’s time, 8:03:56, just beat the old mark of 8:04:08 established by Belgium’s Luc Van Lierde in 1996. For the third straight year, Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae set a new record on the run stage, clocking 2:52:09 and beating her winning run time from 2010 by more than a minute. But Carfrae couldn’t quite catch Great Britain’s Chrissie Wellington, who took a dramatic victory in the women’s race after making up a six-minute deficit coming off the 2.4-mile swim leg. Wellington’s overall finish time of 8:55:08 is the second fastest in race history and trails only her own course record, set in 2009.
