A 49-year-old climber on Friday after his gear failed in a fall. Lyle Dale Hurd III was leading Northeast Buttress (5.10+, 8 pitches) when he fell 40 feet, ripped out his last piece of protection, and impacted a ledge. A 20-person team from Zion Search and Rescue responded, but found him dead at the scene. Hurd’s is the second fatal accident this year, following the death of a 74-year-old man in the Subway slot canyon in September.
