On a recent trip to Cochabamba, Bolivia, Amizade travelers hiked in the Andes, visited Inca ruins, and helped build a rural high school. By melding adventure travel and volunteerism, this “service-learning” organization has orchestrated more than 50,000 volunteer hours in 11 countries since 1994.

From the local Jackson Hole High School to the national Breast Cancer Fund, outdoor apparel company Cloudveil donates money to a smorgasbord of grassroots organizations and causes each year,

Eagle Creek

Each fall, employees at San Diego-based Eagle Creek participate in a food drive, gathering up to 60,000 pounds of canned goods and other nonperishable items for local shelters. In March, the travel gear and luggage company will launch its “Gimme Shelter” program: customers are invited to bring in their old luggage-which will be donated to displaced people saying at local shelters-in return for discounts on Eagle Creek products.

Eastern Mountain Sports

After a ten-year-old died of exposure in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the head of the Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School developed EMS’s free “Stay Put, Stay Dry” programs, which teaches parents and children about keeping safe when lost in the woods. The company also donates new and used backpacks to nonprofit organizations, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

GoLite encourages volunteerism, offering employees one paid week off each year to work with nonprofit groups such as Big City Mountaineers, which leads backcountry trips for at-risk young people.

Hi-Tec has donated $10,000 to Leave No Trace, an environmental organization that spreads the gospel of responsible outdoor recreation. A portion of the proceeds from every pair of Hi-Tec’s Phibian kids’ shoes sold in 2005 will also be donated to Leave No Trace.

The folks at Jackson Hole Mountain Guides help locals reach new heights, offering annual scholarships to underprivileged kids who’d like to attend the International Climbers’ Festival, in Lander, Wyoming, and climb the Grand Teton.

K2 Sports

The pink ribbon you see on K2’s women’s line of skis, snowboards, and skates isn’t just for show-it signifies the company’s commitment to fighting breast cancer. Between 2001 and 2003, K2 donated close to $100,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation-and its pledged another $300,000 through 2006.

Norwegian speed-skater Johann Olav Koss, who won three gold medals at the 1994 Olympics, founded Right To Play to “spread health and peace through sport.” The Toronto-based humanitarian organization runs children’s sports programs in about 20 developing countries, promoting not only the joy and health benefits of athletics, but also AIDS awareness and conflict resolution skills.

In 2005, outdoor gear and clothing company Marmot will give $15,000 to The dZi Foundation, a nonprofit working to improve the quality of life for men, women, and children in the Himalayas.

Through Learn to Ride programs throughout the U.S., the Colorado-based Snowboard Outreach Society, founded by in 1993 by snowboard instructor Arn Menconi, treats more than 1,000 underprivileged and at-risk children to five days of snowboarding and character development training every year.

In 2003 and 2004, Montrail made donations, mostly in the form of gently used shoes and boots, to ten organizations (including the Himalayan Explorers Connection’s Porter Assistance Project) that benefit people in need across the world.

Nalgene matches its employees’ annual donations to the United Way-making for an annual donation of more about $100,000.

New Balance

New Balance is tipping the scales in the right direction when it comes to giving. In 2004, the Boston-based company’s charitable contributions-to groups like the New England Aquarium, the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, the Cuvilly Arts and Earth Center, and the McLaughlin Foundation Garden and the Horticultural Center-exceeded $6 million.

Orvis donates 5 percent of its pre-tax profits to land and water conservation projects-a contribution of up to $400,000 each year. In addition to giving an annual $30,000 to $40,000 to local charities, Orvis also challenges customers to match its pledge of $25,000 to Casting for Recovery, which offers fly-fishing retreats for women who with breast cancer.

In 2004, Sierra Designs donated its products-including tents, bags and clothing-to support worthy causes such as the Sierra Nevada Alliance, a coalition dedicated to preserving and protecting the California mountain range.

San Francisco-based messenger-bag company Timbuk2 donates about 300 bags each year to homeless youth.

Petzl

Petzl makes conservation a top priority – since 2003, the company has raised some $20,000 to preserve the land under Utah’s Castleton Tower. Petzl also promotes Utah Open Lands; last year the company’s annual film festival in Moab netted about UOL about $10,000.

Salomon

Through its Foundation Salomon, Salomon promotes the social and professional rehabilitation of skiers suffering from disabling accidents. Past charitable acts include buying a wheelchair for a paraplegic mountain professional and giving a disabled mountain guide a grant to create a new business.

Vasque

Vasque supports outdoor groups like the Appalachian Trail Organization and the Continental Divide Trail Alliance. The company is also the primary source of funding for the Environmental Learning Center, an alternative school that teaches kids how to get by in the wilderness.
