Jack LaLanne, considered the founding father of the fitness movement, died Sunday at his home in Morro Bay, California, .
LaLanne was known for promoting strength training and healthful eating before they were popular, as well as for his trademark one-piece jumpsuit and a longstanding syndicated exercise show.
“You've got to work at living. Ninety-nine and nine-tenths of Americans work at dying,” he'd say, according to USA Today. “You've got to eat right, exercise, and have goals and challenges. Exercise is king; nutrition is queen. Put 'em together, and you've got a kingdom.”
On Friday, LaLanne had trouble breathing, and doctors said he had pneumonia. His family brought him home to recover, but nothing worked, and at 4:30 p.m. Sunday he died. But his vision and dedication to the health and well being of Americans lives on.
