But that doesn’t mean her workout partner is ready for more after
Delaney’s gone home exhausted. Because dogs don’t have sweat glands, overheating is a big threat, even in temperate weather. So how do you gauge your dog’s ability to keep up on a daily run, cycle, or skate?
“Watch your dog,” says Arleigh Reynolds, a professor of clinical nutrition at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. “It’s that simple.” Reynolds suggests stopping every 15 minutes or so, especially if your dog’s new to the routine or the temperature is above 55 degrees with some humidity. “If your dog sprawls out on the ground when you stop,” he
says, “chances are he’s trying to cool off through contact with the earth.” Excessive panting or drooling are also obvious warning signs–the only way a dog can release heat is through its mouth, and while this cools the head, it does little for the rest of the body. On a hot day, it’s a good idea to soak the dog’s fur before you set out, and to pay attention to any distress signals the hound
may be sending. “If his head and tail drop and he slows down,” says Delaney, “get him to water immediately.” Like humans, dogs can suffer from cramps and diarrhea if they binge in the middle of a workout, so watch for sluggishness after a water break. Give your dog only a pint of water when you get home, then wait 15-30 minutes before refilling its bowl.
And if you’re wondering how your pet compares to the elite athletes of the dog world, know that Reynolds’s sled dog teams often run a hilly three miles daily at 20 miles per hour, pulling a 700-pound load. And that’s just the off-season. But by the time the work gets serious the sled dogs have other burning problems–like how to keep their paws from icing up in
subzero weather. D‹…ñ þ2à…ŸòùOh«’+’³Ù0K ˜Èä ’ 1
