Make a Plan

Between cold weather, travel, and family obligations, the holidays can be a tough time to sneak in a workout. And it鈥檚 understandable to freak out about missing a week or two of training: your blood-plasma volume starts to decline almost immediately, meaning your heart rate for a given intensity will increase when you return to your regular workouts. But , assistant professor of exercise physiology at the University of North Carolina, brings good tidings. 鈥淲e all need a break, and the holidays sometimes force us to do that,鈥 she says. The key is not to fight it. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 plan to take a day off, and you鈥檙e forced to by family or travel, you鈥檙e stressed about it,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 better mentally to just accept it. If you鈥檙e pretty fit, you鈥檒l see adaptations return fairly quickly as soon as you start up again.

What if you鈥檙e training for a January skimo race? Smith-Ryan recommends a simple 20-minute high-intensity interval workout: one minute all-out, one minute of rest, repeat ten times. 聽聽

Eat Wisely

All the mandatory big meals between Thanksgiving and Christmas can leave you feeling like a mall Santa by New Year鈥檚 Day. But there are a few easy fixes. 鈥淪o many foods that we associate with the holidays start out healthy,鈥 says dietitian Jennifer Bruning. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the way we prepare them and what we add that can dilute those qualities.鈥 She walked us through the beta on three holiday classics.

罢耻谤办别测听

Skip: The deep fryer. 鈥淎 great example of how we add a lot of fat and salt to something that started out pretty good for you. You may feel like you鈥檙e boosting the flavor, but you鈥檙e also making it really unhealthy.鈥澛

Serve: A classic roast bird. 鈥淚t鈥檚 got plenty of flavor. The key is to play up those qualities with herbs and spices.鈥 Try a simple rub of thyme, rosemary, oregano, and garlic.

Pumpkin Pie聽

Skip: The traditional version. 鈥淚t鈥檚 better for you than most pies, but it鈥檚 still not great. The problem is all the fat and sugar.鈥澛

Serve: Pumpkin pie crisps. 鈥淧umpkin is a powerhouse, full of antioxidants and phytonutrients that fight cancer and inflammation. Try amping up the flavor of canned pumpkin with pumpkin pie spices, then serve on toasted whole-wheat tortillas with a bit of cinnamon and sugar.鈥澛

Cranberry Sauce

Skip: The canned stuff. 鈥淐ranberries are fantastic for you. The problem is that they鈥檙e incredibly tart, so a lot of sugar gets added to make them more palatable.鈥澛

Serve: Homemade cranberry relish. 鈥淚f you do it yourself, you can really cut down on the sugar by using something 颅naturally sweet like orange juice, which is a lot better than just adding table sugar but tastes just as good.鈥澛

Sandbag the Local Turkey Trot

Signing up for a race is a time-honored technique for the motivationally challenged. Some holiday races are big and well organized鈥斅瑼tlanta has a on Thanksgiving Day, and New York City plays host to a in Central Park. But wherever your in-laws live, there鈥檚 bound to be a fun run nearby. It doesn鈥檛 have to be a priority for your race season, just something to help balance out the office parties and eggnog.
