Salt Lake City, thank your local beavers. Were it not for them, you might be drinking/watering/irrigating with diesel fuel this morning.

a Chevron pipeline’s 8,000-gallon diesel fuel spill from spreading into a reservoir in Willard Bay State Park, which supplies water to Salt Lake City. The two beavers in the dam were soaked in diesel fuel and are being treated at a local wildlife rehabilitation center.

“They are doing fairly well. One is coping better than the other,” DaLyn Erickson, executive director of the rehabilitation center, . “There is some evidence they did at least sample some of the food left for them overnight. We are doing what we can and hoping for the best.”

The benign beavers are thought to be yearlings and possibly siblings. Wildlife rehabilitators are cleaning the fuel from the beavers’ fur with dish-washing liquid, a standard and effective means of removing oil products from fur, feathers, and other animal parts.

Locals can donate “fresh willow and cottonwood branches” to feed the beavers during treatment.

The Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, due to host the rowing events of the 2016 Summer Olympics, was filled with dead fish earlier this week. To be exact: .

The lagoon, which sits below the famous Christ the Redeemer statue, has hosted rowing events in the past (see: ), but it has also hosted other mass fish die-offs (see: , ). And :

According to Mr Moscatelli, the presence of sewage in the lake was due to problems with the lake’s outlet into the Atlantic sea, the canal of Jardim de Allah, which then caused the phenomenon, called efflorescence. Algae expert Mariângela Menezes said that samples of more than 400 per milliliter of the culprit micro-organisms were collected during the days leading up to the disaster, far above what would normally be expected.

From USA Today:

It took 100 municipal workers 48 hours to clean up the mess, which actually sounds quite impressive when you look at the scope of the decay.

Yes, . You can smell it through your computer.

Heading into the final downhill race of the World Cup season in Switzerland, , which meant that Maze only needed to finish in the top 14 to clinch the title.

Except that .

Maze has already set the record for overall points in a World Cup season, and, as the leader in all the other disciplines, she appeared set to become the first woman to win every discipline in a single World Cup.

, even without the downhill title. Still, it’s a bit of a bummer that she’ll miss out on a little piece of history because of some low-lying clouds.

Marketplace reports that Wrigley’s is looking to keep its head above the foundering gum market:

“The gum category has been in decline for a number of years,” says company spokeswoman Jennifer Jackson-Luth. “So Wrigley is really focused on restoring relevance, and getting people to think about functional, or what we call ‘occasion-based’ reasons, to chew gum.”

In the event that you come across the proper occasion to chew your caffeine, .

Retired French cyclist while on his bike. Jalabert, winner of the 1995 Tour of Spain and the 1997 world time trial championships, was hit by an oncoming car in Motauban, a town in southern France.

From :

“He is not in danger,” a spokesman said.

The vehicle suddenly turned left, cutting across Jalabert who had the right of way, the police said.

The 41-year-old suffered several fractures and was briefly unconscious when the emergency services arrived.

He was transferred to hospital to undergo surgery, a source close to the former rider told French radio RTL.

While it appears that Jalabert will recover—and while he’s no longer a professional cyclist—this accident still gets at a larger, un-answered question that’s swirling around the cycling world, as Caty Enders wrote earlier this year after South African Olympic mountain biker Burry Stander was killed by a taxi:

Considering the number of high-profile—and often tragic—cyclist/car collisions in the past couple years (, killed; Bradley Wiggins, injured; , killed; , killed—too many to name) have training rides become the most dangerous element of any pro sport? And what will it take for that to change?

“We have thrown in the towel on solar,” Bob Dudley said after delivering a wide-ranging speech Wednesday.

“Not that solar energy isn’t a viable energy source, but we worked at it for 35 years, and we really never made money,” he added.

BP, which  it was winding down its solar business last year, says it is still committed to other renewable resources, such as wind power and biofuels production.

BP made … wait for it … .

Dianna Hanson, a 24-year-old intern at a Fresno, California, wild cat sanctuary, was killed Wednesday after being attacked by a lion. Hanson, who moved from Washington to California to work at the Cat Haven sanctuary, climbed into the cage of a four-year-old male lion and .

Beyond that, . Officials have released few details, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department reported receiving the emergency call shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friends of the workers said the routine is to feed the cats about noon. The usual method is to go into a small enclosure, leave the food, get out, then let the animals inside from a larger enclosure. According to the sanctuary’s guidelines, caregivers should never be inside with the big cats.

The more experienced volunteer repeatedly tried to coax the lion—a four-year-old male named Cous Cous—into another enclosure, away from the victim, officials said. Police fatally shot the animal before rushing to Hanson, according to Sheriff’s Department officials, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Next time you consider complaining about an internship, just shut up and go get the damn coffee.

The U.S. and Russia are uniting against Canada in an effort to win a hockey gold med—er, no. . Canada, currently, is home to near 75 percent of the world’s remaining polar bears, and it’s also the only country that allows the export of polar bear products.

Around 600 polar bears are killed by Canadian hunters each year, and then exported for their, well, parts. The U.S., supported by Russia, has issued a proposal to ban the export trade. From The Guardian:

The U.S. is adamant the trade is unsustainable. “The best scientific evidence says two-thirds of the polar bear population will be gone by mid-century, so how can you have a sustainable commercial trade?” asked Dan Ashe, head of the U.S. delegation to the  being held in Thailand.

Canada, home to about three-quarters of the world’s 20,000-25,000 remaining polar bears, is the only country that allows the export of polar bear products.  there is “insufficient scientific evidence” that polar bear populations will decline by more than half in the coming decades and that trade is “not detrimental to the species.” They say hunting and trading in polar bears is “integrally linked” with Inuit subsistence and culture.

A vote is expected within the next few days between the U.S. proposal and a European Union proposal, which would only require Canada “to report the number of polar bears exported and provide further information on trade and populations.”

UPDATE: The U.S. proposal was defeated, with 38 voting in favor, 42 against, and 46 abstaining. .
