Birkenstock Tokyo Teddy Shearling ($220)

(Inga Hendrickson)

After a day on the slopes crammed into boots that “fit,” sliding your aching feet into these feels like a spa treatment. The wool-lined forefoot is roomy, and the aged-leather upper looks right at home when you’re sitting by the fire with hot toddy in hand.

Vans City TRL ($110)

Shoes
(Courtesy Vans)

This is the footwear equivalent of Corbet’s Couloir: strictly for the confident and daring. The overbuilt rubber outsole is a mash of cross-hatching and rubber nubs, while suede overlays stack atop still more overlays. An aggressive external heel counter wraps to the midfoot. Experts only.

OluKai Nalukai ($140)

Shoes
(Courtesy Olukai)

Leather boots typically foster sweat and stink, but the Nalukai keeps both at bay with its moisture-wicking, antimicrobial liner. ϳԹ, a full-grain leather upper channels classic mountain-town aesthetics. We loved the podlike design of the outsole, which adds traction without weighing you down.

Merrell Ontario x SK Wax ($160)

Shoes
(Courtesy Merrell)

From its home in the Midwest, hatmaker Stormy Kromer has been shielding the noggins of outdoor enthusiasts for over a century. Merrell’s collaboration, the Ontario x SK Wax, makes good use of this expertise with a paraffin-treated cotton upper and flannel lining. The Vibram Megagrip outsole and reinforced leather accents make this vintage-inspired hiker even more winter-ready.

Chaco Dixon High ($165)

Shoes
(Courtesy Chaco)

Is the Dixon a running shoe? The EVA-foam cushion and wave-patterned rubber outsole would indicate so. Surely it’s a boot, though, with waterproof leather rising up past the ankle to seal out winter drafts. However you choose to categorize it, this Franken-footwear was made for the mountains.

Wolverine 1000 Mile Original Sneaker ($285)

Shoes
(Courtesy Wolverine)

A variation on Wolverine’s über-popular 1000 Mile Boot, this mid-top sneaker is made from waterproof Horween leather and has a flexible Vibram outsole that will help you arrive at the bar without looking like you traversed a glacier to get there.

Six winterized options for when the lifts stop spinning

(Courtesy Timberland)

Timberland Bardstown Plain Toe Oxford ($285)

Weather be damned, some situations call for a dress shoe. When the occasion obliges, we reach for the Bardstown, which has a just-right lugged-rubber outsole to prevent a neck-breaking fall on black ice. As far as we’re concerned, it’s the only oxford appropriate for winter.

(Courtesy Sanuk)

Sanuk Puff N Chill ($80)

Based on a popular summertime staple—Sanuk’s Sidewalk Surfer—the Puff N Chill is beefed up for winter wear with a faux-shearling liner, a puffy-like upper, and mid-top height. The sawtooth outsole was stable enough, but we recommend taking these beyond the lodge bar only in tame weather and on brief errands.

(Courtesy Vans)

Vans UltraRange Hi DxZpr ($130)

Vans could easily rest on the laurels of its classic shoe designs, but over the past three years it has carved out a niche for itself in trail and travel footwear with the UltraRange line. Its latest, the Hi DxZpr, pairs heritage good looks with a gusseted tongue, an aggressively lugged outsole, and a waterproof zipper for blocking slush.

(Courtesy Danner)

Danner Raptor 650 ($240)

A company with no shortage of three-season clout, Danner pleasantly surprised us with the winterized Raptor, adapted from its airy Explorer 650 hiker. Insulated with 400-gram PrimaLoft and a fleece-lined upper, the boot is further sealed from the elements by waterproof leather.

(Courtesy Wolverine)

Wolverine 1000 Mile Arctic ($425)

The Michigan-made 1000 Mile line has been a standard since the 1910s. This year’s Arctic boot trades the general-issue smooth sole for Vibram, then adds a waterproof Gore-Tex liner and treated leather (though you’ll want to wear thick socks, as it’s light on insulation). An already legendary boot gets a winter makeover.

(Courtesy TOMS)

Toms Venice Collection Alpargata ($70)

A tonic for ski-boot-weary feet, the quilted, faux-shearling-lined upper of the Alpargata is just what we want after a long day on the mountain with cramped toes. Our go-to house slipper may never leave the chalet, but a patterned mid-and-outsole combo lends it just enough traction while weighing next to nothing.

(Courtesy Seavees)

SeaVees Legend ($78)

Want a sneaker that you can throw on for a quick errand or dress up for a night at the water’s edge? There’s no wrong way to wear this minimalist, with its stripped-down style, white piping reminiscent of eighties running shorts, and lightweight, breathable poplin-twill upper.

(Courtesy Nisolo)

Nisolo Alejandro ($178)

Hand-woven in León, Mexico, this classic leather espadrille has been a staple of experienced travelers since the days when Ernest Hemingway chased toreadors through Europe. It’s snug at first but breaks in nicely and feels tailor-made after only about a week of wear.

(Inga Hendrickson)

Wolverine Kaden ($240)

This Michigan heritage brand has been making durable footwear for 135 years. Thanks to a stacked leather heel and textured Goodyear outsole, the Kaden is perfect for tromping around rugged locales like Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Plus, the welt-sole construction means that when the grip goes, your boot can be resoled for a comfortable new lease on life.

(Courtesy Vans)

Vans UltraRange Gore ($85)

Last year’s UltraRange was our go-to for globe-trotting. This year, Vans expands the line with two new offerings, including the UltraRange Gore, which ditches shoelaces for three elastic bands. The bands hug your foot and make the shoe perfect for throwing on in a hurry, but stable enough for an impromptu hike.

(Courtesy Timberland)

Timberland Naples Trail ($120)

The stylish, textured upper and sporty, running-shoe-inspired foam midsole may be the strangest combination of any shoe on this page, but we fell in love with the Naples as soon as we laced it up. It’s soft and superlight—we seriously doubt there’s a more comfortable (or nimble) dress shoe on the planet.

(Courtesy Sperry)

Sperry Gold Cup Suede Crepe Chukka ($220)

Combining the comfort of a light and flexible crepe sole and buttery lambskin lining with the buttoned-down good looks of a suede upper and square toe makes this Australian-inspired desert boot the ideal footwear for style-conscious adventurers, sand or no sand.

The North Face ThermoBall Traction Bootie ($60)

This PrimaLoft-insulated kick was like a puffy jacket for our feet. The North Face also slapped on a lugged rubber outsole that had mind-blowing grip even while we were drinking beers on parking-lot ice. Bonus points: that outsole is made from recycled materials.

(Courtesy Vans)

Vans Remedy Boot ($160)

Vans ventures away from its home in Southern California and toward the wintry north with this boot that features a durable galosh-like lower section and a Sorel-like leather upper. The company’s signature white stripe adds flair, and we also loved the comfort of the plush fleece lining.

(Courtesy Forsake)

Forsake Driggs ($140)

A classy leather build matched with pops of color on the heel and shoelaces makes the Driggs stand out. It also has plenty of performance chops, thanks to a waterproof lining and sealed seams. Slip it on for the drive home after skiing, then sport it with jeans at dinner.

(Courtesy Sorel)

Sorel Maddox Moc ($85)

The Maddox Moc is a slipper with teeth, thanks to the meaty herringbone-patterned rubber outsole. We wore it around the house but also took it out for post-ski drinks and were struck by the padded comfort. Not to mention the fact that we never once wiped out on icy streets.

(Courtesy Danner)

Danner Light ($380)

Originally launched in 1978, the Light hasn’t changed much over the years, which is a good thing. It’s still hardy, with a beefy Vibram outsole and an upper of leather and 1,000-denier nylon. A Gore-Tex liner keeps your dogs dry, and damned if that waxed cotton coat doesn’t look sharp.

(Courtesy Ridgemont)

Ridgemont Outback II ($135)

Our favorite for classy, understated capability, this boot is made from burly two-millimeter full-grain leather. We found ourselves wearing it all the time, because it keeps the weather out and works great for dirty jobs like kicking the ice off your car and shoveling the driveway.

From surf to city, these do-it-alls look as good as they perform

The post The Vans UltraRange Are the Best Shoes for Traveling appeared first on ϳԹ Online.

]]>
The Vans UltraRange Are the Best Shoes for Traveling

It started with a simple idea and one that any jet-lagged surfer can sympathize with. Riders on Vans surf team needed something that looked like a shoe but could perform like a light hiker, taking them from the airport to the city to the small, remote island where the break is happening. That solution is the , which has a classic Vans silhouette but is packed with features that make it more suited for handling demanding terrain. After wearing a pair all summer, I think that this is the most versatile travel shoe on the market.

Slip them on—with or without socks—and a seamless, bootie-like design eliminates friction zones reducing the possibility of blisters. A lightweight, airy mesh upper, minimally structured with welded overlays instead of stitched seams to reduce potential rubbing spots, similar to your favorite ultralight running shoe, is breezy on hot days and long walks. I admit they’re not as casual as a flip-flop, but the UltraRange are way sturdier and don’t have me worried they’ll blow out after an off-balance foot plant on a cobblestone.

So why not just pick up a pair of trail runners? Besides the hardcore aesthetics—something I’m not channeling during a vacation—there’s the weight. Cruise ϳԹ’s Summer Buyer’s Guide and you’ll see even the lightest on the list is nearly nine ounces. At 8 ounces, the UltraRange Rapidweld’s are noticeably lighter and have a much more casual look.

But it’s the outsole that makes these essential for me. Unobtrusive lugs, the likes of which you won’t find on a traditional water shoe like the Sperry Shock Light Boat, provide decent off-road traction but aren't so pronounced that you feel them walking down a sidewalk. Think of these as a skate shoe with off-road chops.

For serious, scree-scampering or multi-day treks, these aren't going to be your go-to shoes, and heavier-duty hikers and trail runners with more aggressive outsoles, like the Dynafit Feline Vertical or the New Balance Vazee Summit V2, are better suited to take you far into the wilderness. But unless you’re staying in a remote village at the end of a five-mile long hiking trail, trail-specific footwear is overkill for the average seaside village and looks dorky in amajor metropolis.

The longer the trip, the more important it is for me to carefully consider what I’m lugging around. Versatility is key. Whether it’s a long walk from the parking lot to Lower Trestles or the train ride into Paris, the Vans UltraRange Rapidweld performed well without making me look like I was headed for base camp.

Hoka Just Reinvented the Track Spike

“Left turns only—right turns need not apply.”

The sentiment is so often seen on pro-runner bios that it’s become cliché. Yet it’s true: distance athletes hammering 400-meter loops spend half their time hanging a Louie. It took an outside-the-box newcomer to integrate this basic truth into the design of a track shoe. The result is ($130).

With swooping, asymmetrical sprint plates extending to the outside of the right heel and the inside of the left, runners have something to brace against while riding the bend. Even the pair’s eight spikes are specially positioned for pushing or rail-hugging power. Credit Hoka’s athletes for spending the past two years providing feedback while training for a trip to Rio. If at first glance the Speed seems like a departure from the company’s hallmark marshmallow trainers, it has this in common: a nontraditional solution to an overlooked problem.

Red Wing Weekender Chukka ($230)

The oil-tanned leather upper on this boot only looks better with time. We appreciated small but thoughtful details like tricolored stitching and two-tone laces. And the subdued color meant was primed for pairing with colorfully patterned socks. But take our advice and order a half-size down to ensure a proper fit.

SeaVees Baja Slip-On Portal ($98)

Think of as a hipper version ofa Croc, with an aerated nubuck upperthat doesn’t scream fishing tournament. (Although, like its foam predecessor, itfelt great against our bare feet.) We were definitely showing a lot of ankle but loved how dry and comfy it kept us.

Allbirds Wool Runner ($95)

Not quite as supportive as your go-to trainer, gets the job done regardless during your morning jog and looks sharp in meetings at the office. All that wool helps cut down on stink, but in the rare case that it could use some freshening up, throw it in the washing machine.

This is an eighties classic made better. Instead of heavier canvas, this iteration of comes with a light synthetic upper and a cushy sole. Although it resembles a Mexican huarache, is actually a heritage style from India. Not long after we busted itout of the box, the City molded to our feet for a truly custom fit.

Even Patagonia was tiny back in the day, which is why we’re always searching for the best small companies to watch. Here are products from some of our favorites right now.

Pavepara Canyon Wren Drape Neck Vintage Sari Silk Tank Top ($75)

This Albuquerque, New Mexico, activewear company pairs sourced from India for a women’s tank that’s perfectly tailored and great for any summer activity. We also love that it’s sewn just an hour south of ϳԹ’s HQ.

Voormi River Run Hoodie ($130)

In the morning, this from Voormi, based in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, adds just a touch of warmth whenyou’restanding in a river or hikingup a trail. As the sun rises, the long sleeves and hood ward against sunburn and breathe surprisingly well. It only needs to come off during the hottest afternoons.

Salmon Sisters x XtraTuf Women’s Legacy Boots ($135)

Sisters Emma Teal Laukitis and Claire Neaton grew up in Alaska working on their dad’s fishing boat. Now they run Salmon Sisters, an Anchorage company that sells ocean-inspired gear like these that have an octopus-print liner.Bonus: for every product sold, Salmon Sisters donates one can of Wild Alaska Salmon to theFood Bank of Alaska.

Cotopaxi Luzon 18L Del Dia Pack ($50)

The people who make in the Philippines get full control over the colors they use, which means no two are alikeand each one is a surprise when it ships to your house. This light-duty model weighs less than a pound but still has a waist belt, zippered front pocket, and spot for a bladder.

Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket ($190)

(Courtesy Taylor Stitch)

Boiled lambswool is warm, but it also can absorb twice its weight in water without feeling wet. That means is perfect for the chilly, drizzly mornings in the Bay Area, where Taylor Stitch is based. It’s cut like a slim-fit dress shirt, so be sure to size up if you plan to layer underneath.

Outer Shell ϳԹ Drawcord Handlebar Bag (From $90)

(Courtesy Outer Shell ϳԹ)

Strap this Nalgene-sized, Bay Area–made to your handlebars and use it to hold a camera for on-bike photosor a rain jacket for errant thunderstorms. You can also buy aharnessthat lets it carrya sleeping bag for bikepacking trips.

Mountain Standard Terrain N’ Rain Shell ($230)

(Courtesy Mountain Standard)

If you bought this bombproof, nicely tailored Polartec Neoshell rain from another, bigger brand, you could probably expect to pay at least $100 more. Mountain Standard, a Boulder, Colorado, company, keeps the price low byselling only online and cutting out the costs associated with a brick-and-mortar store. We’ve already used it to stay dry during spring torrentsand we’llbe backcountry skiing with it come winter.

Ornot MacGyver Seat Post Bag ($33)

(Courtesy Ornot)

You can throw your spare tube, tire levers, CO2 canister, and multitool in your commuter bag and then fish them out one by one when shit goes wrong. Or you can keep them in this colorful, San Francisco–made, which straps to the bottom of your seat. The King of the Mountain (KOM) polka-dot design won’t make you a better climber, but it does add flairto your whip.

Camping and backpacking season is here, and we think these are some of the best trail out there.Made from a water-resistant nylon and Spandex mix, they have tons of stretch and great articulation, but don't make you look like a trail geek. Pair them with a flannel and you’ll fit right in with the rest of the hipsters at the bar.
