Powder skiing is the holy grail of ski conditions. Yet surprisingly, many people don鈥檛 feel comfortable skiing deep powder. Often it鈥檚 simply because they haven鈥檛 been exposed to it enough. The truth: with a handful of tips around technique, body weight, and mechanics, you can prep yourself for any powder day. Ski鈥檚 online education course, , can help. We tapped Jackson Hole ski pro Ann Schorling to co-teach the course alongside professional freeskier and Olympian Wendy Fisher at , which just happens to be on the B.C. Powder Highway.

Sneak Peek: Ski鈥檚 tutorial on

Ski caught up with Ann Schorling to talk about the experience, get her thoughts on how to make the most of a powder day, and hear about her favorite spots at her home hill鈥

What鈥檚 the biggest mistake you see people make when they鈥檙e trying to learn how to ski powder?

Schorling: I guess there are two that come to mind. One, powder is slow to react, so everything takes longer. When people try to turn in powder for the first time, they try to turn at the same speed that they would on firm snow. It doesn鈥檛 work and so they wind up working harder to try to make the turn happen as fast instead of being patient and making more subtle movements and letting the turn happen more slowly.

Second, we鈥檝e all been taught to make turns that are round and go across the hill at a controlled speed. If you鈥檙e in powder, that causes you to sink farther down in the powder and you slow down, and it makes it really hard to start the next turn.

What鈥檚 been your favorite powder run and powder destination?

Schorling: Gosh, I am very biased toward Jackson Hole. I think it鈥檚 tough to beat a powder day in Jackson. My all-time favorite powder run would probably be Alta 1 in Jackson or Tower Three.

What鈥檚 been your go-to setup for skiing powder?

Schorling: For a powder day I typically like a ski that is about 100 millimeters underfoot and has a rocker tip so the ski will float a little bit more. My current favorite powder ski is the . It鈥檚 a playful women鈥檚 powder ski that can do it all.

What should people look out for when they鈥檙e watching talented powder skiers? What techniques should they be observing and trying to emulate?

Schorling: Notice the shape of their turn, then compare it to the turns that we would normally see on a groomer and notice the difference. Most of us who鈥檝e been taught to be on firm snow have been taught to roll up on our edges to make the turn happen, and because powder reacts more slowly, the higher your edge angle, the more your skis will dive into the snow and get bogged down. If you watch pro skiers, you鈥檒l notice that they actually don鈥檛 have a lot of edge angle when they鈥檙e skiing powder. They鈥檒l have a little bit but not a lot.

Tested: Pants You Can Pee In

After spending weeks on a Conservation Corps in the Arizona desert last fall, my work pants reeked of urine and my legs suffered dozens of scrapes from trying to find a secluded spot to squat in thorny Devils Claw. I found myself desperately wishing for a pair of听capable outdoorsy pants that could better accommodate my anatomy. So when I heard about Chickfly, a company that makes activewear pants and leggings听with a fly specifically designed so that women (or anyone who prefers an alternative to the traditional zipper) can pee discreetly, I jumped on the opportunity to check them out.

I tested their functionality on the trail with a mellow muddy run听and post-jog stretch. I wore them as pajamas inside my sleeping bag, then as thermals on a warm ski day, to test their comfort and range of motion. But then came the main event: I hung in a climbing harness and let my friend and belayer laugh as I awkwardly grabbed at my crotch and attempted to pee midair. I squatted in various locations, including beside dirt roads and in a snowy canyon.

Before I began trying the pants outside, though, I practiced their capabilities over the toilet and in the shower. You can open the fly, which is made from overlapping pieces of fabric, from the back (giving you enough space to go number two, but a little less privacy) or from the front (good for number one and more private, but creating a smaller opening). My success rate was high鈥擨 only peed on myself once鈥攂ut I was grateful for the practice of stretching the fly and angling my legs and hands correctly, which would have been difficult to do outdoors for the first time.

To wipebefore returning to your outdoor shenanigans, you might need extra practice holding back the fabric layers with one hand while the other wields a pee rag or wad of toilet paper. This technique worked best for me when I used one hand to open them from the front. The pants, which are made of a super-soft, legging-like material, are intended to be worn without underwear, and they are very comfortable and functional commando (you can even wear a pad on the upper layer).听It is possible to wear undergarments if you prefer: you鈥檒l just have to pull them aside along with the pant layers.

Once you鈥檝e practiced using the fly, the process is the same as any time you pee outdoors鈥攆ind a comfortable place, squat, and go鈥攂ut takes half the time. And the major win here is for privacy. You don鈥檛 need to pull the pants all the way down to go, and if you鈥檙e opening them from the front, your back and sides will be fully covered. When you鈥檙e done, the stretchy fabric springs back into place so you never feel exposed for long. Granted, you鈥檙e still peeing outside, so privacy is relative, but you avoid the hassle of hoisting your pants back up and mooning other outdoor patrons.

The pants, with their lycra and sustainable bamboo听fabric, were extremely comfortable. The inner folds of the 鈥渇ly鈥 felt very secure, and I never worried my crotch was going to be on display when I was hiking to a hot spring, hanging in a harness, and getting groceries in town.

The wide waistband can fold down around your hips or be flipped up to hug your belly (an especially great option for pregnant people who prefer a pant that can go either under or over their stomach). The pants fit like a yoga pant would around the legs, flaring out slightly at the bottom. Around the butt the overlapping fabric of the fly gives you a panty line on one side鈥攁 minimal price to pay for their functionality, in my opinion.

I stuffed them in my dirty laundry after two to three wears, but I pulled them out for several more: the bamboo鈥檚 odor-resistant properties kept smell at bay throughout my many test runs. The stretchy fabric makes movement and relieving yourself easy, but may sacrifice some durability on rock or rough surfaces. My only qualm is that the pockets, which are very stretchy with large openings, are not very secure鈥攎y phone once fell dangerously close to a pee puddle.

Overall, the convenience and innovative bathroom access of these pants is unmatched against any I鈥檝e previously tried. They鈥檙e equipped for long hikes, sport climbs, runs, yoga sessions, and long road trips. Preorders for Chickfly鈥檚 pants and leggings were taken over to听 (shipping this summer), and an online store is expected to launch later this year.
