Is the Rise in California Ski Accidents Linked to Weed Gummies and GoPros?

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times and subsequent news sources, California ski accidents are up nearly 50 percent over the last two years, statistics that news reports have attributed to a rise in GoPro use, selfie stops, and “THC-laced gummies.” That’s quite the cocktail, and one interviewee mentioned that chairlifts often “smell like skunks when they should smell like pine trees.” There are some really great quotes in here and an even better selection of interview subjects. Real sharp broadcast.

This Might Also Be Fueling Accidents…

The Arsenic crew out of Scandinavia knows exactly what maniacal street skiing it’s getting into. Thankfully for us, we get to watch and keep our hospital bills to a minimum. Here’s to living vicariously through the young and limber.

Rookie Leaves Mark on Bec des Rosses, Takes Second in FWT

Whistler’s Marcus “Go-go” Goguen carved his name into the Freeride World Tour lore over the weekend, lacing a massive run down the Bec des Rosses to win the final FWT event of the season and secure second place on the year. Max Hitzig earned the first overall prize for the men, while Hedvig Vessel took the women’s crown, but the 19-year-old Canadian and his array of cliff drops had the crowd jumping in Switzerland. Check out his run to see why.

Noah Gaffney Honors Shane McConkey with Iconic Double

It’s hard to believe, but the ski world lost Shane McConkey 15 years ago this week. Noah Gaffney, son of late icon Robb Gaffney and a rising pro in his own right, honored the late McConkey with a massive double backflip off Goodwills at Palisades Tahoe. The feature, which can reach up to 60 feet, had reportedly never been doubled before this stomp.

Gwyneth Paltrow Ski Crash to Become a Musical

Like every great act in history, the bright theater lights have decided to shine a light on skiing’s most pivotal moment: the Gwyneth Paltrow ski crash. This December, Gwyneth Goes Skiing, a new musical detailing the celebrity trial, will hit the stage in London’s Pleasance Theatre. Described as “a story of love, betrayal, skiing, and (somehow) Christmas,” the play will feature original music and audience participation as the cast works towards a final verdict.

FIS Mandates Poles in Freeski Comps

The International Federation of Skiing has officially challenged the style gods, telling freeski competitors that poles will be mandatory for high-level events (World Cup, World Championships, etc) starting this season. Skiing without poles has gained traction in comp worlds over the last few years, as some skiers argue it enhances grabs, tricks, and overall style in big air, slopestyle, and halfpipe events. The announcement came as part of the new FIS Freeski judging rulebook and stipulates that anyone competing without poles will receive an automatic point deduction. Bummer, my dudes.

Kai Jones’s Straight Line Is Straight Bonkers

So you’re saying you’re just going to…point ‘em? Kai Jones may be recovering from injury, but boy, he sent us a reminder of what’s to come this week, with a little video leak of this monstrous 1000-vertical foot straight line. I’m pretty sure this isn’t what I looked like at 16, but keep it cookin’, Kai.

Channeling This Ski Guy Right Now

Sometimes, heroes wear capes; sometimes, they wear beanies under their helmets. Himay Palmer, may we not waste a day more.
