The Route: Climb with rope, ice ax, and crampons to the 14,410-foot summit of the highest glaciated peak in the Lower 48, via either the Muir or Emmons Glacier route.
When to go: May to September
Difficulty: Strenuous
Travel advisory: Except for longtime park concessionaire RMI, all the listed outfitters have temporary permits. Before you plan your trip, check with each company to make sure it has a permit for the 1998 season.
High/low points:
- Being warmed by the first rays of morning sun as you complete Disappointment Cleaver, the most grueling section of the Muir route.
- Performing a snowy face-plant while practicing self-arrest on the first day.
