The Route: Follow the ancient pilgrimage route on two wheels: a seven to 12-day, 330-mile pedal from Burgos to Santiago do Compostela and the burial place of Spain’s patron, St. James. Like pilgrims of old, you may also walk or ride horseback on parts of the route.
When to go: April through September
Difficulty: Moderate
Travel advisory: Decide between the outfitters’ long and short versions of the trip based on the strength of your fitness, not your faith. And about the traditional pilgrim’s scallop shell: It’s permissible to dangle it from your handlebars rather than around your neck.
High/low points:
- Standing good and grimy at the altar of the Catedral de Santiago as the priest awards you a completion certificate.
- Pondering the health implications of being the 754th person that day to kiss the statue of St. james at the end of your journey.
