The Route: A 21-day journey by Russian polar research ship to a subantarctic island. From there you’ll make a challenging six-day overland trek along the last leg of Ernest Shackleton’s escape route from the Antarctic ice in 1916.

When to go: February

Difficulty: Strenuous

Travel advisory: The ship’s Zodiacs make beach landings, so you’ll be wading up to your knees in icy water on many occasions. Bring a good pair of wellies.

High/low points:

  • Voluntarily re-enacting an abbreviated version of Shackleton’s famous 2,000-foot bum-slide.
  • Realizing that Shackleton did this same trek in 36 hours without a map, sleeping bag, or tent — after rowing 800 miles.
