By Todd Balf (with Martin Dugard and John Alderman)

It was a melancholy day for the ascotted, cognac-sipping cultural elite along the banks of the Thames last June as Yankee boats tore up the mile-plus course at the 155-year-old Henley Regatta and took four gold medals. In fact the Americans’ eight-boat-lengths margin of victory in the headlining eight-oar Grand Cup event was the biggest rout at the regatta in some 30 years. “We
set out to go fast the whole race,” says U.S. coach Mike Spracken, referring to the final Grand Cup race against the French. “But I didn’t expect to win by this much.”
