ϳԹ Adviser: Considering all the rental and retail operations within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, you’d be surprised at how few actually offer guided paddling trips. The best of them, Piragis Northwoods Company (800-913-9023), leads an assortment of six-day outings, each with a different focus such as fishing and bird- and
wolf-watching. Rates range from $650 to $950 per person, including all equipment, meals, and first and last night’s lodging at a local Holiday Inn. If you’re just looking for a place to rent a boat and pick up some maps, check in with Wilderness Outfitters, a staple in downtown Ely for 75 years. They have 17-foot aluminum canoes for $15 per day, but for an extra $15 per day
you can drop a whopping 35 pounds with a Kevlar 18-footer. If need be, they’ll also set you up with a complete set-up of camping gear: two-person tent, sleeping bags, pads, food, cooking gear, water filter, lanterns, compass, and maps for $55 per person, per day, including an aluminum canoe. Substitute a lighter boat or a larger tent and it’ll cost you $63 per day. For more
information, call Wilderness Outfitters at 800-777-8572 and check out the write-up of the BWCA in “” in ϳԹ‘s June 1996 issue.
