Pedal with the Pros!
Mountain-Bike racing for mini-riders
It’s midsummer and the kids are tired of popping wheelies in the driveway — and you’re tired of watching them. You’ll all learn plenty of new moves at the third annual Trail 66 Mountain Bike Race Series and Festival, six championship racing and special-event weekends held at northern New England ski resorts. The NORBA-sanctioned
summer competitions include slalom, downhill, cross-country, nighttime BMX, and biker-cross events that award pros $60,000 in cash and prizes. Both kids and adults can rent or bring their own bikes to dual-slalom, downhill, or cross-country race for prizes on the same courses the pros use. Aspiring Tomacs of all ages can take beginner to expert classes and watch demos
by Gary Fisher Pro Riders. Overtire-d families can also scale a climbing wall, fly down a water slide, eat barbecue around a bonfire, and enjoy live alternative bands. Scheduled weekends are the Wicked Wild Mountain Bike Festival, June 19-20 (Mount Snow, Vermont); the River Rage, July 17-18 (Sunday River, Maine); Beauty and the Beast, July 24-25 (Killington, Vermont);
the Wicked Witch of the East, July 31-August 1 (Sugarbush, Vermont); the Pedaling Bear Classic, August 7-8 (Attitash Bear Peak, New Hampshire); and the Widow Maker Challenge series finals, August 28-29 (Sugarloaf/USA, Maine). Call the American Skiing Company at 207-824-5171.
