Moving a family to North Carolina
Q: Where would you recommend raising three boys, ages 10-14? We are considering the eastern TN, western SC, and western NC areas. Have travelers come across some “special” towns in these regions? Please let me know. Thanks!

A: While we can’t provide you with the last say on where to move, we can recommend taking a closer look at Asheville, North Carolina–a small city of just under 70,000 in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. With an economic underpinning of manufacturing and white-collar business–health care, university-related jobs, textile companies, and a
burgeoning American folk-art industry–Asheville has a steady cash flow and a population of hardworking folks. Throw in the nearby Pisgah National Forest and its miles of old logging roads, the cycle-friendly Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park an hour up the road, and the French Broad River that runs right through town, it’s easy to see why locals like to
play hard in their spare time. The city’s branch of the University of North Carolina and a handful of small liberal arts colleges definitely pull their weight in providing cultural and intellectual stimulation.
