The Route: A 17-day expedition to a remote Saharan outpost, with stops at far-flung Dogon villages and an optional trip extension to Araouane. Or a two-week expedition to the legendary forbidden salt mines at Taoudeni.

When to go: November to March

Difficulty: Moderate

Travel advisory: If you are set on seeing the salt mines, opt for the Lost Frontiers itinerary. Mountain Travel-Sobek stops at Araouane, halfway to the mines.

High/low points:

  • Reaching the Taoudeni salt mines without being pursued by Tuareg bandits.
  • Being stranded without your chèche — a ten-foot-long cloth used to protect your face — during a sandstorm.
