The Route: Trekking through the green meadows and soaring spires of white rock that line one of Europe’s best trail systems. Overnights during the five- to 11-day trips are in village inns and remote but cozy rifugios.
When to go: June to September
Difficulty: Moderate
Travel advisory: Some of the outfitters use the notorious via ferrata, or iron trails, a precarious, vertigo-inspiring network of ladders, cables, and footpegs that traverse particularly steep sections of rock — an ordeal for those with a fear of heights.
High/low points:
- Watching a crashing thunderstorm from a rifugio so high in the mountains that you’re looking down on the storm clouds.
- If you’re longing for unpeopled vistas, the Dolomites in the summer is not the place to be.
