Located 75 miles southeast of Missoula, Montana, this working cattle ranch/all-inclusive lodge sits on 6,600 meadow-lined acres with views of the Sapphire Mountains and easy access to great stream fishing, hiking, mountain biking, stagecoach and horseback riding, and wildlife-ogling (moose, elk, wolves, and bighorn sheep have all been spotted on the property).
Pick from 28 accommodations, including nine rooms at the main lodge, eight luxury “canvas cabins,” and 11 private homes. If we had to choose, we’d go with the cabins—canvas and wood structures that blend home-y comforts (i.e., big, plush beds, private bathrooms, gas fireplaces) with a wild, home-on-the-range vibe.
We’re extra fond of the “Trapper Cabin,” which sits just off the banks of Rock Creek and has a custom soaking tub on the porch.
Each accommodation is within walking distance of the ranch’s shared spaces, which include the main lodge, home to a restaurant plating locally sourced meats with a European flair, a canvas canteen acting as a more casual dining option, a Wild West-style saloon with a bowling alley, and an upscale spa.
