You’re in luck: In a few hard-to-reach spots, the turns go on and on.
If you’ve got the cash, the “” package from Alyeska-based is a good bet. This five-day foray into the Tordrillo Mountains of the Alaska Range mixes heli-skiing and heli-fishing for King Salmon.
The trip starts with a short fixed-wing flight from Anchorage to the remote, fly-in only Winterlake Lodge. From there, on any given day, the group might spend the morning and early afternoon heli-skiing, then hit the rivers in the afternoon in search of salmon, before heading back out to the mountains in the evening. (There’s some whitewater rafting thrown into the mix, too.) Some nights, the group eats at the lodge – other times, they might “set up a five-course dinner on a 5,000-foot ridge, and then go ski big chutes off the dinner table,” says Chugach brand manager Chris Owens.
Endless daylight means the package is not for folks with early bedtimes.“ It’s not uncommon for us to go skiing in the Midnight Sun,” says Owens. “In fact it’s almost a moral imperative.”
The late June powder in the Tordrillos is comparable to “the spring snow that you might find at your home resort,” Owens says. Temperatures drop below freezing at night and can hit 60-70 during the day. Kings and Corn lines up with the Summer Solstice for maximum daylight; this year there are three scheduled trips, each at $9,500 a head.
