Adventurous trips around Scandinavia
Question: I鈥檓 planning a trip to Scandinavia for the end of the summer. I know nothing about the area and am searching for information. I am interested in a somewhat adventurous trip. Can you provide any help? Thanks.

黑料吃瓜网 Adviser: Scandinavians are best known for their fanatical love of wintertime sports, but even in summer, the mountainous, lake- and river-strewn terrain provides one massive playground to kayak, bike, hike, fish, and, if you鈥檙e not modest, join the locals skiing naked on Norway鈥檚 Tystigen Glacier. There are a number of
national outdoors organizations you can find on the Internet, but if you want to arrange something from the states, I鈥檇 suggest one of the following trips:

A moderately difficult hiking trip in Norway is Backroads’ “Mountains, Glaciers and Fjords.” The eight-day trip starts in Oslo, winds through pine forests, glaciers, and fjord country, and ends in the beautiful seaside city of Bergen. The terrain is mostly alpine with spectacular mountain views. Plus, in August, you’ll have almost 20 hours of daylight in which to
explore.

Some of the trip’s highlights include a hike to Steinbergsdalshytta, a traditional Norwegian hut complete with a sauna, and to the Jostedal Glacier, the largest ice field on the European continent. Nights are spent at inns along the route. The price for the August 9-16 trip is $2,595 and includes all meals and all the equipment you’ll need. Call Backroads at
800-462-2848.

Borton Overseas (800-843-0602) offers a number of Scandinavian trips, many of which include hiking, biking, and even fishing. One bike trip to consider is the 11-day Denmark and Sweden trip. You would spend the majority of your time biking Bornholm, a Danish island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. That trip starts August 4 and costs $1,367. You could also try Borton’s
hiking trip in the Urho Kekkonen National Park. It’s a one-week, 20-mile-per-day trek through forests, valleys, and the rocky highlands of Lapland. For this trip you’ll have to invest in a pair of kumisaappaat, waterproof boots. Call Borton’s for updated prices.
