Early in the trip, German mountaineer Michi Wohlleben withdrew from the project after injuring his leg while landing a paraglider off Schreckhorn, the fourth summit in their series. On July 22, Martijn Seuren, a Dutch member of Steck’s expedition team, died after falling 950 feet into a crevasse near the border of France and Italy.
