U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Lisa Murkowski on Wednesday that would permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

Established in 1965, the LWCF is set to expire this September. The fund is used to support outdoor recreational activities, outdoor industries on public lands, and state and local conservation efforts. The proposed bill, , would not only permanently reauthorize the LWCF but also create a new National Park Maintenance and Revitalization Fund to help national parks struggling with maintenance needs.

“This important program has helped to protect many of our nation’s iconic and most popular national parks, forests, and public lands, and is itself a treasure,” Senator Cantwell .

The U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources will hold business meetings next week to discuss and vote on the bill, which can then move to the Senate floor for discussion.
